Opening round of the UCI MTB World Series shows every side of the sport
The opening round of the UCI MTB World Series in South Korea brought together everything that defines this sport for Nukeproof Axess Racing: strong performances, setbacks, and moments that stay with you — both on and off the track. The coming weeks will focus on testing and fine-tuning ahead of round two in Loudenvielle.
Beyond the racing itself, one thing stood out immediately: the new Nukeproof team kit. From the first practice runs to race day, the outfit drew attention in the paddock and online. A post on the Instagram account of Nukeproof quickly gained traction, reaching far beyond the core scene. The response was clear: clean, distinctive, and built to stand out without overstatement.
On the sporting side, the team delivered as well. Camden impressed in his first World Cup, finishing 4th, just 1.2 seconds off the win. “I came into the weekend without expectations, just excited to finally race a World Cup. Practice went well and I felt good on the bike straight away. The track was challenging and technical, so I’m really happy with 4th and being right there with the top guys.”

A defining moment
Joe saw clear progress, even if the result didn’t fully reflect it: “I’m proud of how we stayed united as a team, although my thoughts are mainly with Lou and we wish her a strong recovery. It hurts that the result doesn’t fully reflect the progress we made over the winter, but we know the ups and downs of this sport and remain committed to our approach.” For Mille, it was a difficult weekend after a crash in Q1: “A tough weekend, especially with Lou’s injury. We tried to keep the spirit high and make the most of it. My qualifying day was difficult after a few heavy crashes, which meant I couldn’t start Q2. Never nice to sit out, but I’m looking ahead and trying to be smart for the rest of the season.” Oscar came close to qualifying and looks ahead: “A good start to the season, close to the front and right around the qualifying cut. I want more, and I know what needs to be done. I’m already looking forward to Loudenvielle.”
The biggest impact, however, came from Lou’s heavy crash earlier in the week. A harsh reality within the sport, but at the same time a moment that brought the team closer together. The focus is now fully on her recovery. Ferguson crashed during downhill training and sustained multiple rib fractures and spinal fractures. Considering the circumstances, she is doing well.
With a strong visual presence, a viral wave on social media and a promising sporting start, Nukeproof now looks ahead. At the end of May, the next round will take place in Loudenvielle in the French Pyrenees. The foundation is there. The attention is there. Now it’s time to build.
